Matsushima Beaches 2017
Summer is finally here. Matsushima Bay has many places to cool down with the steady sea breezes and relax to the sound of the waves. From mid to late summer there are a few beaches open that are good for swimming.
1. Tsukihama 月浜 (Higashi-Matsushima City)
The Tsukihama area on Miyato Island is well-loved as a swimming beach (月浜海水浴場) with calm waves. In 2017 it will be open daily between 7/22 (Sunday) and 8/20 (Sunday) from 9am to 3pm.
There are showers (fee) and toilets available.
Access: The Tsukihama Public Beach is about a 15 minute car or taxi ride from Nobiru Station (JR Senseki Line or Senseki-Tohoku Line). There is pay parking for up to 100 cars.
2. Katsurashima Island 桂島 (Shiogama City)
This island is good for walking, fishing from the pier (bring your own equipment), and picnics. The beach area has facilities including showers (100 yen), changing room (50 yen), parasols (1000 yen rental) and food for sale. It is about a 10 min. walk from the boat pier to the beach.

1. From Shiogama, municipal ferries depart from the Marine Gate Terminal at 7:15, 9:30, 11:00 (weekends only), 13:00, 15:30, and return at 8:46, 11:21, 12:41 (weekends only), 14:31, or 17:01. It is approximately a 25 min. boat ride.

Fare: 1000 yen round trip. Purchase ticket for 桂島往復 (1000円) from ticket machine on the first floor of Marine Gate Shiogama.
2. From Matsushima’s sightseeing boat pier map, boat operator Marubun Kisen is offering special direct boat trips to the swimming beach on Katsurashima Island in Matsushima Bay and back.
When: 7/22 (Sat) to 8/20 (Sun) Departs Matsushima at 10AM, returns for Matsushima at 3:30PM
Fare: Adults 1500 yen; Children 750 yen

3. Shobuta Swimming Beach 菖蒲田海水浴場 (Shichigahama Town)
The town of Shichigahama (literally “7 beaches”) has among the best and most popular beaches in the region. Shobuta is a large beach with toilets, food, showers, and more.
There is a beach festival celebrating the post-tsunami recovery with music and fireworks from 6-9pm on Sat 7/29. flyer

When: open for swimming from 7/15 (Sat.) to 8/20 (Sun.)
